FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in an initial consultation?

An initial consultation is an opportunity for us to explore what you're looking for in therapy, and whether or not working together might be a fit. I will ask about what has brought you into therapy and will summarize and clarify to ensure I have a clear understanding of what it is you're dealing with. At the end of the session I'll give you feedback and make recommendations on how I think therapy could help you address the things you are concerned about. You are then free to decide if you'd like to embark on a course of therapy, or to take some time to consider whether therapy is right for you at this time.

An initial consultation for couple or relationship counselling follows a similar format, with the difference being that the relationship (rather than the individuals comprising the relationship) is the client.

What's your approach to therapy?

I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy and I have consequently sought out training and experience with a variety of therapeutic modalities for both individual and couples' therapy. My emphasis is on creating a therapeutic relationship between us, a space where you feel heard, understood, and respected. With a strong therapeutic alliance as a foundation, I feel I have the skill set and experience to tailor a treatment approach that fits the needs of each individual client.

Are counselling fees covered by my extended health benefits?

Since I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor, clients with Extended Health Benefits can apply to have fees reimbursed, according to the terms set out by their health benefits insurance carrier. Fees are also reimbursable for clients who have access to a work-funded Employee Assistance Plan (EAP), subject to the conditions of that plan. Under some circumstances, clients may also apply to have fees reimbursed through third party insurance. Please send an email or call 604-315-8118 for more information.

How long do I have to wait before I can get an appointment?

It takes courage to reach out for help, and I try to be as responsive to that as possible. Because there are evening and weekend appointments available, a first session can usually be arranged within a few days.

What if I am from out of town?

While ModoSano is not a residential program, I would be happy to help you make arrangements for your stay in Vancouver, and would work with you to devise an intensive program that would meet your needs. I also offer distance counselling (via Skype) for clients who do not live in the area, or who have other barriers to attending counselling.

How long do I attend counselling?

The course that counselling takes depends on each client's individual situation and needs. We begin counselling with a thorough assessment, including assessing your goals and desired outcome for therapy. We then work together to design a treatment plan aimed at helping you achieve those goals.

What's the referral process?

Clients can self-refer. Call 604-315-8118 or send an email to arrange an initial consultation.
